Stair Fanfare

This is not what the Stairway to Heaven looks like.

This IS what the stairway of our house looked like last summer when we moved in.

Lest you all forget about those Barbie-arms peach colored walls that made up most of our home, here is a friendly reminder.

The staircase runner came with the house, and was quickly full of sawdust, spackle and paint flecks after our initial bout of DIY when we moved in.

And we ripped out the carpet.

After some cleaning and a fresh coat of paint (and we removed the handrail), it was looking a little fresher.

The staircase is right in the middle of the house – between the kitchen and dining room.

It’s looking better. But it’s lacking in personality. Soon enough.

For now I am happy with freshly painted walls and stairs!

But I have started looking at some new runners…

I was inspired by this beautiful re-do at Rare and Beautiful Treasures:

Tell me, do you like your stairs bare or carpeted?

  1. That yellow looks great with the white. I think the covering depends on the surrounding floors. If there is hardwood/laminate, I’d leave the stairs bare. If there were carpet, I’d carpet the stairs, too. Having grown up in old New England houses, I prefer wood over carpet any day. It’s timeless.

  2. I long for hardwood stairs. We can’t do it in our house right now due to the glorious plywood underneath it and the cost it would take to do them would probably equal a basement or kitchen reno at this point. So they’re staying carpeted. At least in this house.

  3. Agreed! I think we will do some runners in the upstairs hallway, but our entire house is hardwood (with one part of the office which we will be putting down hardwood).

  4. I’ve fallen down way too many bare-wood stairs versus carpet (which sounds odd…you’d think it’d be the other way around) so I’m definitely a fan of carpeted stairs or stairs with runners. It warms up the stairwell too, which even a fresh coat of paint couldn’t do, in my opinion.

  5. I’m a big fun of carpet runners but I have to admit that the combo: bare+yellow paint definitely brings the stairs a lot more light and a touch of style! Good work!
